Anna is the only daughter of a Japanese figure skater (Hiroya Fujishige) and a Chinese actress. Her maternal grandfather is from Hong Kong, and her maternal grandmother is from Beijing (thus the Mandarin name Xiulan, which means elegant orchid). Growing up, she divided her time between Hong Kong and Kyoto, Japan, studying classical Japanese dance, figure skating, and music (especially the samesin). At thirteen, she decided to pursue a career as a Geisha, and made applications to apprentice as a maiko with the Gion Higashi hanamachi in Kyoto. She began her apprenticeship at fourteen, but by sixteen, had tired of the rigorous schedules and isolated lifestyle. Her parents' separation hastened her disillusionment with the geiko lifestyle, as she blames her absence for their breakup. Outspoken and willful, she quit, and decided to concentrate on figure skating full time in California.

Anna dated her ex-choreographer, Ilya Anikushin, for awhile, then broke things off with him without explanation. Soon after, she got together with her friend Kai Heawg, and everything’s been groovy since. They married in September of 2005 in Las Vegas, during Mesuni Heawg’s and Jesse Aims' wedding reception.
