Brief Bio: This kind hearted wife, mother, and ballet instructor is better known to the world as legendary ballerina Anna Nikolaievna Marakova. The
daughter of Soviet diplomat Nikolai Alexandrovich Marakov and gymnastics
coach Svetlana Ivanovna Marakova was recognized for her talents at the age
of four. Her early mastery of technique, musicality, and stage presence set
her apart from other dancers and was selected to receive instruction with
the Bolshoi Ballet. In 1975, she would graduate from the academy and move
directly to the rank of principal ballerina making her solo debut in Moscow,
dancing the role of "The Swan". Her performance drew comparisons to past
greats including Anna Pavlova, Maya Plitseskaya, and Galina Ulanova. The
following year, Marakova would follow her long time teacher to St.
Petersburg, where she had been appointed the new head of the Kirov Academy.
Unfortunately, after a year her mentor would pass away, and she would return
to Moscow and the Bolshoi to be closer to her family. Anna's career would
reach its peak over the next four years, performing all of the most famous
roles in ballet repertory, in cities around the world, cementing her place
among the greatest ballet dancers of all time, and earning the rank of prima
ballerina assoluta. During a stop in Paris in January of 1980, she would
fall in love with a medical student from Marseilles, Gaetan Dupont, who
would eventually become her husband. After becoming pregnant with Alexander
in 1985, she would retire from the performance stage and devote herself to
family life and developing the next generation of great dancers.
